Radiofrequency Ablation of Facet

What is it?

Nerve block refers to the application of chemical agents to a nerve to impair, either temporarily or permanently, the conduction along that nerve. The agents most frequently used are phenol, alcohol, and local anesthetics. Chemical neurolysis is a nerve block that impairs conduction by means of destruction of a portion of the nerve. When these agents are applied to the treatment of spasticity, the intent is to interrupt the stretch reflex arc.

What are the benefits?
Chemical neurolysis has been performed at every level of the peripheral nervous system from the root to the motor end plate. The therapeutic result achieved and the potential side effects and complications depend to some extent on the anatomic site at which the nerve is injected.
